Student Short-term Mobility Program: Beach Clean Up at Mertasari Beach
On the third day
of the visit, students and staff from Universiti Malaya and the Department of
Civil Engineering at Universitas Udayana took part in a Community Service
activity through a beach cleanup at Mertasari Beach, located on the eastern
coast of Denpasar. In the month of May, this coastal area often experiences a
buildup of marine debris due to changing currents, making it an ideal time to
carry out environmental preservation efforts.
This
collaborative action served as a meaningful gesture of environmental
responsibility, uniting students from both institutions in an effort to raise
awareness about coastal cleanliness. Equipped with gloves and trash bags,
participants worked together to collect plastic waste and debris along the
shoreline, demonstrating the impact of student-led initiatives on real-world
environmental challenges.
Hung Lik,
chairman of the Civil Engineering Student Organization at Universiti Malaya,
shared his appreciation: “Everything was well-organized, and the activities
were both engaging and meaningful.” The spirit of cooperation and hands-on
learning was evident throughout the event, highlighting the value of
international academic partnerships.
Dr. Yuen Choon
Wah stated, “The Department of Civil Engineering, Universiti Malaya extends
sincere thanks and gratitude to the host university, Universitas Udayana, for
the hospitality and support provided during this mobility program. The students
and staff gained memorable experiences and valuable knowledge through their
visit to this beautiful island. We are looking forward to colleagues and
students from Universitas Udayana visiting us in the near future and giving us
a chance to introduce the unique culture of Malaysia and thank them for their
hospitality.”
This beach
cleanup marked the closing activity of the Short-Term Mobility Program
organized by Universiti Malaya in collaboration with the Civil Engineering
Department of Universitas Udayana. It is hoped that similar collaborations will
continue to flourish between Universitas Udayana and other universities around
the world. As a token of appreciation, Universitas Udayana presented
certificates of recognition to Dr. Yuen Choon Wah and his students for their
active participation and contribution during their stay in Bali.
