Professor I Nyoman Sutarja Attends International Symposium at Mount Fuji Research Institute, Japan 2025.

Prof. Dr. Ir. I Nyoman Sutarja, M.S recently participated in an international symposium held on 12th May 2025 at the Mount Fuji Research Institute in Yamanashi, Japan. The event brought together leading researchers, academics, and disaster management professionals from around the world to discuss strategies for disaster mitigation, particularly in volcanic regions.

Representing his home institution in  Unviersitas Udayana Bali, Indonesia, Prof. Sutarja presented a topic titled “The Role of Local Universities in Disaster Mitigation” His presentation highlighted the crucial role that academic institutions play in community education, early warning dissemination, and collaborative research in disaster-prone areas.

In his speech, Prof. Sutarja emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and strong university-community-government partnerships. He shared the experiences and lessons learned from Mount Agung’s eruption in recent years, showcasing how local universities contributed to risk assessments, public awareness campaigns, and the training of emergency response teams. He also showed the student of Civil Engineering, Universitas Udayana who conducted community services to teach the student in primary school to aware the hazard of Agung Volcano and how to mitigate it.

The symposium also served as an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation on volcanic disaster preparedness in further collaboration with Indonesian institutions. Prof. Sutarja’s participation in the symposium reflects the growing recognition of the academic sector’s role in addressing global challenges, particularly in regions vulnerable to natural disasters like Bali.
